How to Choose the Right Bathroom Vanity

Choosing the right bathroom vanity includes getting a style you love but also one that has all the features you need and it is an important choice because you will interact with it every day.

We help clients all the time with this question and so we thought it useful to go through a basic checklist to help you make a good choice if you are getting ready for a bathroom remodel.

Consider Who and How

The vanity you choose should take into account the people who are going to be using it, and the type of things they will be using it for.  For example, if you are a couple or have a busy family who will need the sink at the same time, in the morning, you may be leaning towards a vanity with a double sink. If you’re by yourself, you could make do with something smaller.

You also need to take into account how you will be using your vanity. If you are someone who likes to do their makeup and hair, you’ll want more counter space and storage.

Plumbing

Using current plumbing will dictate where the vanity will go and what sizes you are able to consider.   Changing it up is possible but adds significant cost to the project.

Obstacles to Consider for a Vanity

Often bathrooms are smaller spaces and they usually have a lot of moving parts that you want to make sure flow seamlessly with each other.  For example when choosing a vanity consider: the door swing of the bathroom to make sure it is not interfered with, the location of the toilet – do you want the vanity near it and if so where?, shower doors – are they in the way, etc.

A tip to getting this right can be as simple as walking into your bathroom with a “vanity substitute” like a box and feel how the space functions.

Storage

Think about how much storage is important to you in the vanity.  Some bathrooms have cubbies and other shelf units for example that take on extra items, but if you need to store personal products, cleaning items etc. in the vanity space you will want to make sure you get a style with the appropriate drawers and cupboards.  (Depending on the space and what you want to store, there may have to be some compromise).

Remember: Drawers and cabinet doors take up different kinds of space. Drawers will extend out in front, and doors will swing out and to the side. Depending on the placement and layout of your bathroom, one may work better than the other.

Sink Style

The size of your sink will also depend on your priorities for the vanity.

With so many sink styles available, it can be a little overwhelming trying to pick the one that you’ll like the most. The best way to approach it is to decide how much counter space you want, and how much should be allotted to the sink.  The counter space and sink style will work in tandem with the vanity that works best in your space.
